Establish the car's identity, ownership, condition and lawful departure from Poland before committing, then prepare the Spanish registration file.
This guide is for a private individual already resident in Spain who buys a used, already registered M1 passenger car for personal use. It excludes changes of residence, business activity, historic vehicles, major modifications and special customs situations.
The main route is mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, with Union goods: not an ordinary import from a third country. The Canary Islands are outside the VAT territory: introduction with Union status requires a declaration and IGIC assessment, distinct from an import from outside the EU. Without evidence of that status, do not rule out duties. Ceuta and Melilla have their own customs and IPSI route. Also confirm regional or foral jurisdiction. ES01, ES06, ES19, ES20, ES28

Before reserving: identity, ownership and condition
Request the registration number, VIN and date of first registration for Historia Pojazdu. Cross-check its readings against servicing and wear: the service includes inspection mileages from 2014 but does not necessarily reconstruct the car's life before Poland. No recorded incidents does not mean no damage. The PDF is informational; if access from abroad is restricted, ask the seller for the report. PL1
Examine the dowód rejestracyjny, the registration document, and the acquisition document. If the seller and registered holder differ, require the full chain of transfers; notarised copies are accepted. Do not pay while links remain unexplained. The old karta pojazdu may provide a cross-check, but issuing it ceased to be required on 4 September 2022: do not make it a universal requirement. PL-SUP-02, PL-SUP-03
The badanie techniczne, the Polish roadworthiness test, does not replace a physical examination. Compare the VIN, bodywork, underbody, repairs and wear against the documents. Request details of defects and unchecked areas. Before an irreversible deposit, send technical documents to a Spanish ITV station: the CoC establishes technical conformity, not condition or ownership; a ficha reducida does not by itself remedy a type approval that does not exist. PL1, ES04, BR02
Request a contract or invoice identifying the seller, car, price and actual tax scheme. A professional and a private seller do not lead to the same tax branch. The documents must support the transaction, not simply repeat the advert. ES01, ES05, ES12
Leaving Poland: check the complete permit
The sale does not replace registration or legalised plates required for driving. These are the export elements checked against official sources on 09.09.2026:
| Element | What to resolve before transfer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant and office | The owner applies. Without permanent or temporary Polish residence, the relevant place is the place of purchase or collection. | PL-SUP-01 |
| Documents and plates | For an already registered car with a new owner: acquisition and registration documents; the owner surrenders the previous plates and receives a temporary permit and legalised temporary plates. | PL-SUP-02 |
| Deregistration | Check who handles deregistration following sale or registration abroad. Deregistration by the authority exists with an export permit and the required declaration. | PL-SUP-01 |
| Validity | Temporary registration for up to 30 days; a 14-day extension may be granted to clarify registration matters. Check your permit's dates: it is not an automatic extension. | PL-SUP-01 |
| Technical condition and route | Confirm inspection status, permit conditions and recognition in every actual country on the route. | ES17, PL-SUP-02 |
| Insurance and fees | Confirm OC for the buyer, permit and dates; permit with stickers 18.50 PLN and car plates 30 PLN, excluding other expenses. | PL-SUP-01, PL-SUP-04 |
Compulsory OC transfers rights and obligations to the buyer, including outstanding or recalculated premiums; it does not renew automatically. The policy handed over may not reflect its current validity. If valid OC is missing, the buyer must take out insurance on the day of purchase and must not drive beforehand. Request specific confirmation after sale, export or deregistration and for the whole route. Without sufficient evidence, hire transport and arrange delivery to the ITV separately. PL-SUP-04, ES31, ES17
Inspection before commitment
Poland appears in CarAudit's public coverage consulted on 08.09.2026. The inspection costs 289 EUR including VAT; optional traction-battery diagnostics for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles add 179 EUR. Confirm the vehicle, access and availability: it does not include transport, registration or a guarantee of detecting every defect. Check the scope and request availability before paying a deposit. BR01, BR03, BR05
Taxes and the Spanish file
For VAT, used requires more than 6,000 km and more than six months since first entry into service. In a private sale, assess possible ITP separately. With a professional, identify the ordinary scheme, margin scheme or distance sale: do not always assume Polish VAT or turn an invoice without itemised VAT into a private purchase. An ordinary transfer of a used Union vehicle does not by itself add Spanish VAT again as a new vehicle. ES05, ES12, ES28
If either used-car condition fails, review the new-vehicle branch. For a private individual under the ordinary AEAT regime, form 309 is filed within 30 days of the transaction and before final registration; do not generalise to all used cars or territories. For ITP, confirm the regional or foral authority, base, rate, form, deadline and evidence: there is no universal 4%. ES11, ES28
IEDMT concerns first final registration: form 576 for self-assessment; 05 and 06 for different cases, respectively with and without prior recognition. They are not interchangeable. For a used car, determine fiscal market value and the statutory treatment of residual indirect taxes; do not multiply the advertised price or invent a discount. ES07, ES08, ES09, ES10
Ordinary basic rates in mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, consulted on 08.09.2026 and subject to territorial jurisdiction: up to 120 g/km, 0%; more than 120 and less than 160, 4.75%; from 160 to less than 200, 9.75%; from 200, 14.75%. If required emissions are not evidenced, category 4 applies, not zero. Use acceptable documentary CO₂ without improvised NEDC/WLTP conversions. A zero rate does not mean an exemption or automatic use of form 06. ES07, ES08
Confirm IVTM with the municipality for the address on the registration document, including the amount and statutory quarterly apportionment. DGT requires original foreign documents, the Spanish ITV card and tax evidence; private purchase: translated contract and ITP evidence; foreign professional: invoice with tax identification. ES15, ES01, ES02
Article 65.1.d requires applying for final registration within 30 days of the legally defined start of use in Spain: this is not a period for driving or completing registration. Spanish green plates for the wait last 60 days, with a conditional extension; they require a simultaneous final registration application and corresponding documents. Fee 1.4 neither includes physical plates or insurance nor cures an incomplete file. ES07, ES16

Complete checklist
Static version: all rows are pending. Documents or conditions still need checking. Do not treat the file as complete. This list does not authorise the purchase or guarantee condition, registration or suitability.
| Check | Required evidence | What it means | What it does not prove | If there are discrepancies | Sources | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Identity and registration | Physical VIN and original dowód rejestracyjny. | Link the car and registration. | Do not prove condition or authority to sell. | Do not pay until every discrepancy is clarified. | PL-SUP-02, ES01 | To check |
| Seller and purchase | Identity, intermediate acquisition documents and contract or invoice with tax scheme. | Record the counterparty and acquisition chain. | Do not guarantee absence of disputes. | Require missing links before committing. | PL-SUP-02, ES05 | To check |
| History and mileage | Available Historia Pojazdu, readings and servicing. | Allow the recorded sequence to be cross-checked. | Do not exclude damage or earlier gaps. | Request evidence explaining inconsistencies. | PL1 | To check |
| Physical inspection | Report, scope, defects and inaccessible areas. | Describes observations and limitations. | Does not guarantee condition or registration. | Clarify limitations and budget for repairs. | BR02, BR05 | To check |
| Export and transfer | Permit, plates, dates, technical status, OC and route or transport. | Record the specific transfer. | Polish authorisation does not establish the entire route. | Without evidence, book transport and delivery to the ITV. | PL-SUP-01, PL-SUP-02, PL-SUP-04, ES17, ES31 | To check |
| Spanish file | Technical route, ITV card, identity, taxes and DGT documents. | Prepare the Spanish application. | Applying is not the same as obtaining permission. | Resolve discrepancies with the ITV, tax authority or DGT. | ES01, ES02, ES04, ES07, ES16 | To check |
Documents or conditions still need checking. Do not treat the file as complete.
The planned interactive version uses “To check”, “Document checked” and “Conflict found”. A discrepancy takes priority, followed by any pending item. Only checking every relevant condition allows the complete result, without authorising purchase. Labelled controls, visible focus, Tab/Shift+Tab, arrow keys and Enter/Space; the result is announced accessibly. “Reset checklist” returns everything to pending. “Print checklist” includes rows, states, result, limitations and sources. It collects no personal data and does not automatically validate documents.
Frequently asked questions
What information do I need to check Historia Pojazdu before travelling?
The registration number, VIN and date of first registration. Cross-check available data against the originals. If access fails, request the report from the seller; certain foreign records for a car outside CEP may require a Polish trusted profile. The PDF is informational, not evidence of a complete history. PL1
What if the seller differs from the holder named in the documents?
Request all acquisition documents linking the registered holder to the seller. The regulation requires intermediate changes to be documented in this situation and accepts notarised copies. A verbal explanation or history report does not replace that chain; do not commit while links are missing. PL-SUP-02
Which registration and insurance allow the car to leave Poland legally?
The temporary export route requires its permit and legalised plates, together with valid OC cover and verified technical and driving conditions. Check the holder, dates, deregistration and recognition in each country on the route. The seller's policy alone does not establish that cover; without evidence, arrange transport. PL-SUP-01, PL-SUP-02, PL-SUP-04, ES17, ES31
Must every car have a karta pojazdu?
Do not require it universally: issuing it ceased to be necessary from 4 September 2022. If an old card exists, request it to cross-check earlier history; it does not replace registration or acquisition documents. PL-SUP-03, PL-SUP-02
Does a car advertised as used avoid new-vehicle VAT?
The advert is not enough: it must simultaneously exceed 6,000 km and six months since first entry into service. If either condition fails, review the new-means-of-transport branch and its territorial regime before calculating taxes. ES05, ES11
Does a CarAudit inspection guarantee I can register the car?
No. The inspection describes observations within its scope and limitations; it does not replace the ITV, taxes, original documents or DGT's decision. Confirm availability for that vehicle and resolve the Spanish file separately before completing the purchase. BR02, BR05, ES01
Decide once the pieces are together
Resolve identity, ownership, defects and transport before committing; then prepare the Spanish file. Contact CarAudit to confirm an inspection, not purchase approval.
