For private individuals already resident in Spain who buy a used, previously registered M1 passenger car in Austria for their own use. Before paying, check original documents, condition, transport and Spanish technical acceptance. Moving residence, business activities, historic vehicles and major modifications are outside this guide.

The territory changes the procedure
The main route, mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands with Union goods, is not an import from outside the EU. The Canary Islands are outside the VAT area: entry with Union status requires a declaration and assessment of IGIC; without proof of that status, do not rule out customs duty. Ceuta and Melilla have their own customs and IPSI route. Confirm the competent regional or foral authority and municipality. ES01, ES06, ES19, ES20, ES28
Connect documents, history and inspection
Compare the physical VIN, Zulassungsbescheinigung, approval document, §57a report and contract or invoice. If the seller and registered keeper differ, require authority to sell and the acquisition chain. Registration does not guarantee ownership or freedom from finance. The Fahrzeug-Genehmigungsdokument joins registration part II to the applicable approval document. Request originals and send them to the intended ITV station: neither the document's name, a CoC nor CO₂ in the advert establishes acceptance for that VIN. A ficha reducida does not by itself remedy missing type approval either. AT-OFF-03, ES04
The §57a Pickerl periodically checks road safety and operation; request the complete report, validity, defects, available readings and subsequent repairs. It replaces neither a physical inspection nor the Spanish ITV card. Official keeper information requires a substantiated legal interest; it is not a complete public history. Official deregistration has no fee. The transfer-plate procedure costs EUR 248.60: insurance administration 65.60; transfer fee 124; plates 23; deposit 36. The insurance premium is separate. The deposit is refunded when the plates are returned within one year. Do not add the breakdown again. NoVA: a refund and the price are different matters
For deliveries or transfers abroad from 1 July 2026, §12a requires an application and conditions to be met. The application period is five years from delivery or transfer of the deregistered vehicle. Evidence is required of actual departure, Austrian deregistration, original NoVA, eligibility for registration, VIN, blocking in the approval database and value. AT-OFF-05, AT-OFF-06
The time test limits the interval between first registration worldwide and Austrian deregistration to 48 months; foreign registrations count and intervening deregistrations do not stop the clock. First registration before 1 July 2022 is excluded under the new rule; a later date does not guarantee entitlement. Without a valid Pickerl, or if recorded as a total loss, continued eligibility must be demonstrated. AT-OFF-05, AT-OFF-06
For a sale abroad, the basis normally starts with the net price, capped by the average net value in valuation tables and the net acquisition price. The historical rate and the limit of NoVA originally paid also apply; refunds above EUR 5,000 require a valuation. Do not calculate using missing data. AT-OFF-05, AT-OFF-06
The FAQ distinguishes applicants according to whether it is a delivery or a transfer. Agree whether the price already reflects the expected refund and who bears refusal or any difference: a promise is not your discount.
Taxes and the Spanish registration file
For VAT, used status requires more than 6,000 km and more than six months since first entry into service. Between private individuals there is no business VAT; check ITP. With a professional seller, identify the ordinary, margin or distance-sale regime: do not always assume Austrian VAT or turn an invoice without separately stated VAT into a private sale. Ordinary movement of a used Union vehicle does not by itself add Spanish VAT again as for a new vehicle. ES05, ES12, ES28
If either used-vehicle condition is not met, check the new-vehicle branch. For a private individual under the ordinary AEAT regime, form 309 is filed within 30 days of the transaction and before definitive registration; do not generalise this to all used cars or territories. For ITP, confirm the regional or foral authority, taxable base, rate, form, deadline and proof; never assume a universal 4%. ES11, ES28
IEDMT concerns first definitive registration; form 576 is for self-assessment, while forms 05 and 06 cover different cases with and without prior recognition. They are not interchangeable. For used vehicles, establish the tax market value and legal treatment of residual indirect taxes; do not automatically use the purchase price or invent deductions. ES07, ES08, ES09, ES10
Ordinary basic rates for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, checked on 08.09.2026 and subject to territorial competence: up to 120 g/km, 0%; above 120 and below 160, 4.75%; from 160 and below 200, 9.75%; from 200, 14.75%. Where required emissions are not proven, heading 4 applies, not zero. Use admissible documented CO₂, without improvised NEDC/WLTP conversions. A zero rate is not an exemption or an automatic reason to use form 06. ES07, ES08
Confirm IVTM with the municipality of the address on the registration certificate, its amount and statutory quarterly proration. DGT requires original foreign documentation, a Spanish ITV card and tax evidence; for a private purchase, a translated contract and proof of ITP; for a foreign professional seller, an invoice with tax identification. Article 65.1.d requires an application for definitive registration within 30 days of the legally defined start of use in Spain: this is not a period allowing driving or requiring completed registration. Green plates while waiting last 60 days, with conditional extension, simultaneous application for definitive registration and the corresponding documentation. Fee 1.4 excludes physical plates and insurance and does not repair an incomplete file. ES07, ES16

There is no automatic total: professional transport and driving are alternatives, as are certain tax branches. Unknown amounts need quotations; NoVA is not deducted while entitlement and agreement remain unconfirmed.

What Austrian documentation do I need besides the registration certificate?

Only if you can demonstrate that the conditions for the whole journey are met. Who can claim a NoVA refund, and how does it affect the agreed price?
For a delivery abroad, the applicant is the person transferring the power of disposal when the vehicle leaves its Austrian location; collecting the car does not automatically make the buyer the applicant. For a transfer while retaining that power, it is the person moving it. The economic effect requires a signed agreement: a pending refund has no automatic amount or discount. AT-OFF-05, AT-OFF-06
Does a valid Pickerl replace a pre-purchase inspection?
No. It is a periodic Austrian safety inspection, not a guarantee of current condition, hidden defects or complete history. Review the report and subsequent repairs, commission an independent physical check and confirm the Spanish ITV route. AT-OFF-04, ES04, BR02
Is it enough for the advert to describe the car as used?
For VAT it must exceed both 6,000 km and six months since first entry into service. If either condition is not met, check the new-vehicle branch and the applicable territorial regime before calculating taxes. ES05, ES11
