Buying a used car in Sweden and registering it in Spain

This guide is for a private individual already resident in Spain buying a used, registered M1 passenger car in Sweden for personal use. Before a non-refundable deposit, require consistency between VIN and seller, original documents, no blocking issues, lawful departure and a Spanish technical and tax route. Moving residence, business purchases, historic vehicles and major modifications are excluded.

The two parts of the registreringsbevis, fordonsrelaterade skulder, deregistration and the temporary permit may change your decision. Make final payment conditional on rechecking debt and any prohibition on use, receiving originals and documenting plates, insurance and every leg up to ITV.

A transaction within the EU

If both tax criteria for used status are met, Sweden–Spain is an intra-Community acquisition, not an ordinary customs import. The main branch covers mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. The Canary Islands are outside the Spanish VAT territory: with documented Union status, you must file the entry declaration and submit the case for IGIC assessment, a separate branch from importing from a third country; without proof of that status, do not automatically exclude customs duty. Ceuta and Melilla are outside the Union customs territory and apply IPSI. ITP depends on regional or foral competence. ES05, ES06, ES19, ES20

VIN, seller and registreringsbevis

Match the car's VIN to the certificate, contract, technical data and besiktning. Identify the seller and registered keeper; clarify leasing, the lessor's approval and any Kreditköp. The register helps, but it is not a universal civil title or a guarantee of authority to sell. SE-OFF-05, SE-OFF-07

Require current originals of parts 1 and 2. Part 1 contains keeper or user, leasing and technical data and accompanies the car when travelling. Part 2 is sent to the keeper—or lessor—and is used for ownership changes and deregistration; a duplicate invalidates the previous version. Another Member State may request both. Confirm VIN, version, signatures and prior acceptance by ITV and DGT. SE-OFF-03, SE-OFF-04, SE-OFF-05, ES01

The contract or invoice must specify the vehicle, parties, price, sale regime, originals, debt, departure and proof of export. Distinguish private and professional sellers, ordinary VAT, margin schemes and distance sales; an invoice without separately stated tax does not make the transaction private. ES01, ES05, ES12

The debtor and consequences for the vehicle

Generally, the person who was the keeper when the charge was decided owes it; the personal obligation does not pass to the buyer. However, the car may retain a prohibition on use—no driving and possible plate removal—or face conditional enforcement by Kronofogden. Not every debt means immediate seizure. SE-OFF-01, SE-OFF-06, SE-OFF-08, SE-OFF-09

Check debt and any prohibition with the seller immediately before paying. The seller signs in using their own means; do not request credentials. If enforcement exists, confirm the full balance with Kronofogden. Require any payment to appear as recorded: a zero balance or receipt is not an all-clear, because decisions or costs may appear later. Retain funds or withdraw until it is resolved. SE-OFF-01, SE-OFF-06

Besiktning is not a pre-purchase inspection

Cross-check official status, report, dates, mileage, defects, repairs and maintenance. A missing record does not prove that no event occurred; a favourable besiktning does not prove current condition, complete history, actual mileage, ownership, debt status or Spanish type approval. Physically inspect the car and document scope and inaccessible areas. SE-OFF-07, BR02

Swedish deregistration and temporary registration

Under the temporary route, the buyer permanently resident outside Sweden applies for the permit while the seller simultaneously requests deregistration. The decision, certificate and special plates are sent to a Swedish address; the decision travels with the car. The published procedure costs SEK 0, with insurance separate. SE-OFF-02, SE-OFF-10

Approval requires originals and eligible status: no prohibition due to unpaid charges, a Swedish inspection passed within the last 12 months, no driving prohibition or test order, and the additional technical validity specified by the form. Prepare the original certificate with signed deregistration, plates, technical evidence, proof of recorded payments and applicable insurance. Applying does not guarantee approval. SE-OFF-02, SE-OFF-10

It is valid for one month, cannot be extended, requires departure from Sweden and ends on a change of ownership. Depending on the branch, Swedish temporary insurance or a certificate from the EEA destination for 30 days is provided. These periods are not equal: day 31 may be uninsured.

Without a temporary permit, ordinary deregistration requires notification, plates and evidence of permanent departure, such as destination registration, confirmation from its authority or a carrier's certificate. A contract, invoice or receipt alone is insufficient. Allocate responsibilities in writing. SE-OFF-03

Road, ferry or vehicle transport

Verify the issued permit and plates, driver, dates, technical condition, insurance territory and exclusions, every country, Spain and ferry conditions. One Swedish month or 30 policy days do not automatically cover the route. Without complete evidence, use professional vehicle transport and separately organise lawful delivery to ITV. ITV and DGT

Bring Swedish originals, the contract or invoice and technical supporting documents. ITV decides for that VIN whether a CoC, ficha reducida or another route applies and issues the Spanish card; neither besiktning nor a ficha reducida guarantees type approval. Resolve the version, CO2 and modifications before buying. ES01, ES04

After taxes and IVTM, apply for ordinary registration. Fee 1.1 was EUR 99.77 on 08.09.2026, excluding ITV, taxes, plates, insurance and an administrative agent. Filing is not obtaining a permit. Green plates, where applicable with a definitive-registration application, last 60 days and fee 1.4 was EUR 20.61; extension is conditional and plates and insurance are separate. ES02, ES16

Four branches you must keep distinct

For VAT, used means more than 6,000 km and more than six months simultaneously. If either condition is not met, check the new-vehicle branch and, under the common tax administration, form 309 within 30 days of the transaction and before definitive registration. It is not permission to drive. ES05, ES11

For a private used-car sale, separate regional or foral ITP. With a professional seller, identify ordinary VAT, the margin scheme or a distance sale. There is no single national ITP rate or deadline. ES05, ES12, ES13, ES14, ES28

In mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, basic IEDMT bands for passenger cars are: up to 120 g/km, 0%; above 120 and below 160, 4.75%; from 160 and below 200, 9.75%; from 200, 14.75%. They depend on category, accepted CO2 and possible territorial variation. Zero is not an exemption; the used-car base starts from tax market value and residual tax treatment, not always the price. Do not invent CO2. Forms 576, 05 and 06 are not interchangeable. ES07, ES08, ES09, ES10

IVTM depends on the municipality. The tax reference to 30 days from the start of use in Spain to apply for definitive registration does not authorise just any foreign plate either. ES07, ES15

A budget without a fictitious total

Do not add alternative transport or tax routes together, or convert SEK without an exchange-rate quotation.

Six checks

Static version: everything starts pending. “Conflict found” takes priority, then “To check”; only when every condition has been checked can the result be “Document checked”. It does not validate documents, authorise buying or guarantee registration.

Frequently asked questions

Can a vehicle-related debt affect me even if I am not the debtor?

Yes. The personal debt generally stays with the person who was the keeper when the charge was decided, but the car may retain a prohibition on use or face conditional enforcement. Check with the seller just before paying; let them sign in without sharing credentials. If Kronofogden is involved, confirm the balance there and require payment to be recorded. A negative result is not absolute: delays and pending costs are possible. SE-OFF-01, SE-OFF-06, SE-OFF-08, SE-OFF-09

Which parts of the registreringsbevis do I need to export and register the car?

Obtain current originals of parts 1 and 2. Part 1 contains technical data and accompanies the vehicle when travelling; part 2 is used for ownership changes and deregistration. A duplicate invalidates the previous version and another Member State may require both. Cross-check the VIN and file and consult ITV and DGT before paying. How does Swedish temporary registration work for a buyer resident in Spain?

The buyer permanently resident outside Sweden applies while the seller handles export deregistration. The decision, certificate and plates are sent to a Swedish address. Approval depends on originals, inspection and status. It lasts one month, cannot be extended and ends with another ownership change. The destination insurance certificate under the EEA branch lasts 30 days: day 31 may be uninsured. Check countries and ferry; without complete evidence, use vehicle transport and arrange delivery to ITV. SE-OFF-02, SE-OFF-10, ES17, ES31

Does a favourable besiktning replace a physical inspection before buying?

No. It allows dates, mileage and recorded defects to be cross-checked, but does not establish current condition, complete history, actual mileage or freedom from debt. Review the report and repairs, inspect the specific car and separately confirm the ITV route. SE-OFF-07, ES04, BR02

Is it enough for the advert to describe the car as used?

No. For VAT it must exceed both 6,000 km and six months since first entry into service. If either condition is not met, check the new-means-of-transport branch and form 309 where applicable. Keep evidence; the advert does not decide the tax regime. ES05, ES11

Does a CarAudit inspection guarantee that I can register the car?

No. It documents observations within its scope, but replaces neither originals, deregistration, insurance, type approval, ITV, taxes nor DGT's decision.
