Buying a used car in Slovakia and registering it in Spain

This guide is for a private individual already resident in Spain who wants to buy a used, previously registered M1 passenger car in Slovakia for personal use. Before paying a non-refundable deposit, check the VIN, seller, document chain, registration and technical status, and departure with valid plates and insurance. Moving residence, business purchases, historic vehicles and major modifications are excluded.

Certificate parts I and II, ODO-Pass, AUTO-Pass, kontrola originality and the V plate can change the decision. Make payment conditional on receiving originals, resolving discrepancies and documenting who handles deregistration and how the car will lawfully reach Spanish ITV.

A purchase within the EU

If both tax criteria for used status are met, Slovakia–Spain is an intra-Community acquisition, not an ordinary import from a third country. The main branch covers mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. The Canary Islands are outside the Spanish VAT territory: with documented Union status, assess the entry declaration and IGIC; without that evidence do not automatically rule out customs duty. Ceuta and Melilla apply their IPSI branch. ITP depends on regional or foral competence. ES05, ES06, ES19, ES20

VIN, acquisition chain and authority to sell

Compare the physical VIN with parts I and II, the contract or invoice, technical documentation, history and checks. Identify the seller, buyer, registered owner and keeper, and retain every acquisition document, consent or mandate. No isolated registration entry, contract or authorisation guarantees civil ownership, freedom from finance or unlimited authority to sell; stop payment if there is a discrepancy. Establish the actual regime: private seller, dealer, ordinary VAT, margin scheme or distance sale. An invoice without separately stated tax does not make the transaction private. The contract should allocate originals, deregistration, checks, the V plate, insurance and the consequences of a failed application. ES01, ES05, ES12

ODO-Pass and AUTO-Pass are different

ODO-Pass shows odometer readings at recorded events and their sources, mainly Slovak. Verify the pass number and date, periods and jumps. Its maximum validity is six months and may end earlier because of a new pass or incompatible data. On RPZV it cost EUR 0.24 with one record and EUR 7.90 with two or more on 09.09.2026; these are alternatives according to availability, not export fees. SK-OFF-03, SK-OFF-05

AUTO-Pass adds available fields—for example blocks, leasing, encumbrances, damage, registration countries or checks—depending on the car and version. Web prices were Basic EUR 5.90, Extended EUR 9.90 and Complete EUR 16.90; do not add versions together, and Complete may be unavailable. An empty field or authentic pass does not prove complete history, current mileage, title or condition. SK-OFF-04

Cross-check both against originals, servicing and repairs. A national record may omit foreign events. Also commission a physical inspection of the specific car. When kontrola originality is required

For ordinary export with a change of keeper, require a “fit” opinion no more than 15 days old. “Temporarily fit” is usable only under the legal condition that the identifier is legible and can be determined reliably. The check is not universal: exemption applies if the keeper does not change or if first Slovak registration occurred no more than 60 days before deregistration. Confirm any uncertainty in writing with the police office. SK-OFF-01

The check compares identifiers, construction, documents and information systems to detect unauthorised interventions. Retain the opinion and record, but do not confuse it with a check of mechanical systems, electronics, corrosion, wear, ownership, value, ITV or Spanish type approval. SK-OFF-02

Who handles deregistration and what the buyer must receive

Deregistration is handled by the currently registered owner or keeper, with the owner's consent when the actual relationship requires it. Resolve the form, identities, foreign buyer's data, insurance, ordinary plate, contract and the buyer's attendance or an authenticated mandate or acquisition document. Do not repeat that only the owner can act or that the foreign buyer submits alone. SK-OFF-01

After correct deregistration, receive parts I and II in the foreign keeper's name, the original contract or invoice, originality opinion if applicable, technical and approval evidence, and insurance. The V number and plate are issued only if requested. Their documents and plate have a maximum limit of 30 days from deregistration, not handover. Confirm the current fee with the competent police office before paying. SK-OFF-01

Driving or using vehicle transport

Before driving, verify the issued certificate and V plate, holder, driver, exact dates, valid technical inspection, policy territory and exclusions, every country and Spain. Thirty days of domestic validity do not establish recognition or insurance throughout the route. Without complete evidence, use professional vehicle transport and separately organise lawful delivery to ITV. SK-OFF-01, ES17, ES31

ITV and Spanish registration

Keep the Slovak file and enquire for the VIN whether ITV accepts a CoC, ficha reducida or another route. Slovak technical inspection and the originality check do not replace the ITV card or Spanish type approval. Resolve the version, emissions and modifications before buying. ES01, ES04

Then provide evidence of taxes and IVTM and apply for registration. DGT fee 1.1 was EUR 99.77 on 08.09.2026, excluding ITV, taxes, plates and insurance. Filing is not obtaining a permit. Green plates, where applicable with a definitive-registration application, last 60 days and fee 1.4 was EUR 20.61; extension is conditional and plates and insurance are separate. ES02, ES16

Keep tax branches distinct

For VAT, used status requires more than 6,000 km and more than six months simultaneously. If either condition is not met, check the new-vehicle branch and form 309 where applicable. For a private sale, separate regional or foral ITP; with a professional seller, identify ordinary VAT, margin or distance sales. ES05, ES11, ES12, ES13, ES14, ES28

In mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, basic IEDMT bands are: up to 120 g/km, 0%; above 120 and below 160, 4.75%; from 160 and below 200, 9.75%; from 200, 14.75%. They depend on category, accepted CO2 and possible territorial variation. Zero is not an exemption; the used-car base uses tax market value and the applicable legal treatment of residual indirect taxes, not automatically the purchase price. Do not invent coefficients, formulas or deductions. Forms 576, 05 and 06 are not interchangeable. ES07, ES08, ES09, ES10

IVTM depends on the municipality. The tax deadline of 30 days from the start of use in Spain to apply for definitive registration does not authorise driving with just any foreign plate. ES07, ES15

A budget without a fictitious sum

Do not add alternative ODO-Pass or AUTO-Pass versions, transport and driving, or incompatible taxes. The Slovak export fee remains to be determined.

Six checks

Everything starts pending. “Conflict found” takes priority, then “To check”; only when every condition has been checked can the result be “Document checked”. It does not validate documents, authorise buying or guarantee registration.

Frequently asked questions

How do ODO-Pass, AUTO-Pass and a physical inspection differ?

ODO-Pass gathers odometer readings at recorded events and their contributors; AUTO-Pass adds available fields such as blocks, leasing, encumbrances, damage or checks, according to the version and car. A physical inspection examines the vehicle now. Verify number, date, coverage and discrepancies: an authentic pass, an increasing line or an empty field does not guarantee comprehensive mileage, complete history, ownership, mechanical condition or Spanish acceptance. When is a kontrola originality required for export?

Who should handle the vehicle's departure, and which documents will I receive for Spain?

The currently registered owner or keeper handles deregistration, with the owner's consent where applicable; do not assume only one can act or the foreign buyer submits alone. Resolve attendance, a mandate or an authenticated acquisition document. Receive parts I and II in the foreign keeper's name, original contract or invoice, originality check where applicable, technical evidence, approval and insurance; if driving, also the requested documents and V plate. Does the V plate automatically permit driving to Spain for 30 days?

No. It is issued only on request and its maximum limit, like that of export documents, runs from deregistration, not handover. Verify the holder, driver, dates, technical inspection, written insurance and recognition in every country. Is it enough for the advert to say the car is used?

No. For VAT it must exceed both 6,000 km and six months since first entry into service. If either condition is not met, check the new-means-of-transport branch and form 309 where applicable. Keep evidence of date and mileage. ES05, ES11

Does a CarAudit inspection guarantee Spanish registration?
