Understand current and older Czech documents, recorded mileage and export options before buying a car for registration in Spain.
This guide is for a private individual already resident in Spain buying a used, previously registered M1 passenger car in Czechia for personal use. Moving residence, business activities, historic vehicles and major modifications are excluded.
Distinguish the current ORV from the old technical certificate, interpret STK readings and choose the administrative exit route. Agree who performs each step, which originals you receive and how discrepancies will be resolved before paying a non-refundable deposit. CZ-OFF-01, CZ-OFF-03, CZ-OFF-05

The territory changes the procedure
The main route is mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands with Union goods, not an ordinary import from outside the EU. The Canary Islands are outside the VAT area: entry with Union status requires a declaration and assessment of IGIC, distinct from imports from third countries. Without proof of that status, do not rule out customs duty. Ceuta and Melilla have their own customs and IPSI route. Confirm the regional or foral authority and municipality. The old document is not mandatory for every car
Since 1 January 2024 Czechia has issued a single registration certificate, the ORV. Previously valid sets comprising an ORV and the large technical certificate may remain valid until a registration procedure takes place. For export, the technical certificate is supplied if it was issued: do not automatically reject a car because it lacks the old format. CZ-OFF-01, CZ-OFF-03, CZ-OFF-04, CZ-OFF-05
Compare the physical VIN, ORV and official technical data. If data are missing or incompatible, request resolution through the official channel or the ORP registration office and keep the resulting record. An on-screen enquiry does not replace original export documents. CZ-OFF-03, CZ-OFF-04
Send the ORV, official data, CoC or other approval evidence and any old certificate returned invalidated to the intended ITV station before payment. A CoC establishes conformity, not condition or ownership; a ficha reducida does not by itself remedy missing type approval either. CZ-OFF-03, ES04
Identify the actual seller and cross-check the contract or invoice against the acquisition chain. If the seller differs from the registered keeper, require title evidence and authority to sell; administrative status as owner or representative does not guarantee civil ownership free of disputes or finance. Recorded readings are not certified mileage
Kontrola tachometru provides a VIN-based lookup of readings recorded at STK technical inspections and emissions stations. They may not reflect the actual current mileage. Cross-check dates and readings against maintenance, invoices, instrument-cluster replacements and wear; a gap or decrease needs an explanation, not an automatic accusation of fraud. CZ-OFF-02
Request STK and emissions reports, validity, findings and subsequent repairs. Neither that inspection nor an identity check examines every current or hidden fault. Commission an independent physical inspection; a history with no incidents does not prove an absence of damage or replace Spanish ITV. CZ-OFF-01, CZ-OFF-02, ES04, BR02

Choose an export route and substantiate the journey
There are two administrative branches for the EU: limited-validity export plates through an ORP office, or actual registration by the new owner in another Member State followed by notification from that authority to Czechia within two months. The second does not work if registration never takes place. The deadline between authorities does not permit two months of driving or set a Spanish deadline. Agree on steps, originals, plates, proof of registration and the consequences of failure. CZ-OFF-01, CZ-OFF-05

Carry the international green card recommended for travel abroad. Neither it nor the domestic electronic register establishes all coverage. If evidence is missing for any leg, arrange professional transport and separately organise lawful delivery to Spanish ITV. CZ-OFF-06, ES17, ES31
Taxes and the Spanish registration file
For VAT, used status requires more than 6,000 km and more than six months since first entry into service. Between private individuals there is no business VAT; check ITP. With a professional seller, identify the ordinary, margin or distance-sale regime: do not always assume VAT in the purchase country or turn an invoice without separately stated VAT into a private sale. Ordinary movement of a used Union vehicle does not by itself add Spanish VAT again as for a new vehicle. ES05, ES12, ES28
If either used-vehicle condition is not met, check the new-vehicle branch. For a private individual under the ordinary AEAT regime, form 309 is filed within 30 days of the transaction and before definitive registration; do not generalise this to all used cars or territories. For ITP, confirm the regional or foral authority, taxable base, rate, form, deadline and proof; never assume a universal 4%. ES11, ES28
IEDMT concerns first definitive registration; form 576 is for self-assessment, while forms 05 and 06 cover different cases with and without prior recognition. They are not interchangeable. For used vehicles, establish the tax market value and legal treatment of residual indirect taxes; do not automatically use the purchase price or invent deductions. ES07, ES08, ES09, ES10
Ordinary basic rates for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, checked on 08.09.2026 and subject to territorial competence: up to 120 g/km, 0%; above 120 and below 160, 4.75%; from 160 and below 200, 9.75%; from 200, 14.75%. Where required emissions are not proven, heading 4 applies, not zero. Use admissible documented CO₂, without improvised NEDC/WLTP conversions. A zero rate is not an exemption or an automatic reason to use form 06. ES07, ES08
Confirm IVTM with the municipality of the address on the registration certificate, its amount and statutory quarterly proration. DGT requires original foreign documentation, a Spanish ITV card and tax evidence; for a private purchase, a translated contract and proof of ITP; for a foreign professional seller, an invoice with tax identification. ES15, ES01, ES02
Article 65.1.d requires an application for definitive registration within 30 days of the legally defined start of use in Spain: this is not a period allowing driving or requiring completed registration. Green plates while waiting last 60 days, with conditional extension, simultaneous application for definitive registration and the corresponding documentation. Fee 1.4 excludes physical plates and insurance and does not repair an incomplete file. ES07, ES16
A budget with visible unknowns
Pending amounts need confirmation. Do not add professional transport and a complete drive back, or alternative tax branches. Retain the currencies: do not convert CZK to EUR without a documented exchange rate.

It shows readings collected during STK inspections and emissions measurements following a VIN lookup. They may not match the actual current mileage. What procedure and permit do I need to bring a car from Czechia to Spain?
Document one branch: export plates through an ORP office or actual registration in another EU state and subsequent notification between authorities. To drive, verify the permit, holder or authorisation, STK, driver, dates, insurance and recognition in every country. Can I finalise the budget using an export fee found online?
Do not use an unconfirmed figure: the official pages consulted give contradictory descriptions. Ask the chosen ORP office or official transport portal for the current amount for your case before paying. Keep that item pending and do not convert koruna to euros without a documented exchange rate. CZ-OFF-01, CZ-OFF-05
Is it enough for the advert to describe the car as used?
For VAT it must exceed both 6,000 km and six months since first entry into service. If either condition is not met, check the new-vehicle branch and territorial regime before calculating taxes. ES05, ES11
Does a CarAudit inspection guarantee I can register the car?
